Did al-Zarqawi finally get his due?

The rumors abound that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was among a group of jihadi terrorists who blew themselves up to avoid capture by US and Iraqi forces. (And he just thought Iraq was hot.) DNA tests are apparently pending.

Just a few of the blogs swarming the story: Kilo Echo 4, Stop the ACLU, No End But Victory, Iraq The Model, Michelle Malkin, The Mudville Gazette, Wizbang!, Smash, Sister Toldjah, Strata-Sphere, Decision 08, The Jawa Report, Speed of Thought, California Yankee, MY Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, Q and O, Obligatory Anecdotes, Protein Wisdom, Irish Pennants, Blackfive , Riehl World

Amazingly enough, al-AP has even seen fit to mention that one of their heroes may not be around any more: Al-Zarqawi May Be Among Dead in Iraq Fight. Watch for an admiring obit in The New York Times any day now.

I'll keep and eye on the story as it develops.

Trent Duffy, a White House spokesman, said reports of al-Zarqawi's death were "highly unlikely and not credible." [Source] Actually, that's pretty much what the White House would say if they're not sure yet; better to set low expectations and raise them later than the other way around. We'll see.

Dafydd ab Hugh still has his knack for saying more in fewer words than anyone else I know:

[A]ll human life has value... but sometimes that value is a negative number.

On the other hand, I'm not sure it's even fair to call an animal like Zarqawi human. When he finally meets his 72 virgins, here's betting they're all 300 pound males who think he's just the cutest little thing they've ever seen.

According to The Washington Post (Hat tip: Ace.):

U.S. military officials believe it is possible that Zarqawi was killed in the raid but will not know with certainty until DNA tests are run, said a U.S. military intelligence official involved in Iraqi issues.

There is a "30 percent" chance that one of the bodies is Zarqawi's, he said. But he warned: "We've had dry holes before."

Over the past month, the official said, there has been a series of raids following a surge in tips from Iraqis unhappy with Zarqawi and his operation. These tend to be traditional Iraqi leaders -- sheiks and imams -- upset with the organization, especially its recent execution of Sunni Arabs in Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar. "Their feeling is that al Qaeda in Iraq has overstepped its bounds," he said.

Whether the heathen bastard was in that house or not, it sound's pretty clear that he's quickly running out of places to hide; his days are numbered.

The Counterterrorism Blog is reporting that some people who should know say Zarqawi was not one of the people killed in that housefull of jihadis. (Hat tip: Don Surber)
