Racism right in my back yard

I've been offline for several hours due to ISP problems so I'm going to have to keep this short, but it's too important not to mention.

U.S. accuses SIU of anti-white bias

President Bush's administration has threatened to sue Southern Illinois University, alleging its fellowship programs for minority and female students violate federal civil rights laws by discriminating against whites, men and others.

Do read the whole thing.

It's about damned time. I hope the government follows through on this and that it's just the first of many such lawsuits. I'm all for equal opportunity, but it needs to be equal for everyone, not just certain minorities.

Full disclosure: I was born and raised in southern Illinois, which historically has a lot more in common with West Virginia and Kentucky than with the Chicago area. As mentioned in the comments of one of the blogs I'll be linking to (I've already forgotten which one) it would make sense in an awful lot of ways to split Chicago and its suburbs off as a separate state. My family's roots go back through Kentucky to West Virginia, and before that to Scotland and Ireland. Does that make my ancestors part of the problem that today's reverse discrimination is supposedly needed to compensate for? Not in the least. My ancestors were dirt poor farmers, right up to and including my grandparents and some of my aunts and uncles. My father never stepped foot in a high school, but studied hard and earned a GED diploma after he got back from WW2. My generation was the first with any realistic hope of attending college. I myself dropped out of the University of Illinois after two years due to financial problems, at the same time as hundreds of Chicago blacks were receiving a free ride just for being black, and enlisted in the Air Force hoping I'd still be around in 4 years to use my GI Bill benefits. That was 35 years ago and I guess an argument could be made that such reverse discrimination was appropriate back then, but the time has come to say "Enough's enough." The playing field has been tilted in favor of blacks long enough; now's the time to level it.

Not surprisingly La Shawn Barber has the best take on this I've seen anywhere. Also worth reading: Free Will and In the Agora.

Yes, it's about time. Take a look at this link from Stop The ACLU. There's a link to a WaPo story concerning changing priorities at the DOJ's Civil Rights division. Crying and moaning about not enough good old time civil rights lawsuits. http://stoptheaclu.com/archives/2005/11/13/civil-rights-focus-shift-at-the-justice-department/
